Agricultural poisons? No thanks!

The “Agricultural Alliance for Our Grandchildren’s Future”  was initiated – Rapunzel is a founding member and contributes to the protection of pesticide-free foods

100 % organic is possible.
Healthy soils and highly diverse biological communities secure the future.

What's behind the "Agricultural Alliance for our Grandchildrens's Future" and what are the goals of the campaign "Agricultural poisons? No thanks!"?

The alliance is an association of companies that stand for 100 % organic. Some of the companies belong to the founding fathers of the organic movement in Germany such as Rapunzel Naturkost with its founder, Joseph Wilhelm.

The members of the alliance employ several thousand people, they secure the existence of thousands of rural organic farms and provide millions of people with high-quality organic products for a good and healthy life.

The alliance was co-founded by the civil society organizations „Landwende e.V.“ that initiated the campaign „Agricultural poisons? No thanks!“ and the „Schweisfurth Foundation for a Sustainable Agriculture and Food Industry“.

What are the goals of the Agricultural Alliance for Our Grandchildren's Future?

We want to promote an agriculture that secures our grandchildrens’s future. With that we mean agricultural practices that

  • focus on the welfare of the land,
  • protect the habitats of insects, birds and other animals in open fields and water bodies,
  • enhance humus build-up,
  • support soil life,
  • prevent the input of poisons into the soil, into potable water reservoirs, the air and into food products,
  • increase plant diversity,
  • provide an adequate income for organic farmers,
  • are independent of the global agricultural industry and
  • that are rooted in a broad social consensus.

"We only have this one planet: this means that we have the highest responsibility to cultivate our land in such a way that it will be preserved for future generations.

At Rapunzel, we have always been obliged to this idea. Therefore, we are flying the flag for the protection of the natural diversity and against the use of herbicides and pesticides.

For that reason, we are committed to the ›Agricultural Alliance for Our Grandchildren's Future‹ and to the campaign ›Agricultural poisons? No thanks!‹."

Why was the alliance founded?

From October 2015 through January 2016, the civil organization Landwende implemented the »Urinals« campaign that included analyzing 2011 German citizens for glyphosate through the urine analysis. This privately financed campaign is the world’s largest data collection on glyphosate exposure.

Glyphosate was detectable in 2001 of usable 2009 urine samples – a detection rate of 99.6 percent. Only 8 samples – or 0.4 percent – had results that were below the detection limits of the testing procedure.

In 79 percent of the test samples, the exposure was 5 to 42 times higher than the maximum residue level for pesticides in potable water. This value is set at 0.1 nanograms per milliliter. The urine samples of children and juveniles had the highest measured values.

Nearly half of the test persons consumed preferentially organic food products. Their glyphosate values were only slightly below the glyphosate values of people who consumed conventional food products – there was no difference between people who lived in the countryside or in cities.

What are the causes for this? The nutrition cannot be the reason because organic products underlie a strict residue control. Could it be that glyphosate is spread by air from the fields into the cities despite opposite claims by the pesticide industry?

This is one of the questions we want to address in independent studies.

Our approach (and the reason why trees do not lie):

In order to answer this question, the Institut TIEM Integrierte Umweltüberwachung (TIEM Institute for Integrated Environmental Surveillance) examined tree bark samples with respect to their contamination with agricultural poisons. The tree bark was taken from 47 different locations in Germany from either protected areas, organically cultivated regions or from inner cities. The samples contained more than 100 active substances that must have been transported to the tree bark by air; more than one dozen of these active ingredients were detected very often. Among these most common active ingredients were the easily evaporating selective herbicides pendimethalin and prosulfocarb.

Glyphosate, a solid substance that should not spread by air pursuant to regulatory authorities, was also among the five most common substances – a new and highly alarming result!

Our demands:

Our grandchildren should still be able to enjoy organic food products from Germany. Organic cultivation must therefore be protected against poisons from conventional agriculture. Otherwise, a »co-existence of different forms of cultivation« that is propagated by the European Union will not be possible. As a first step, we demand: agricultural poisons that are spread by air, especially pendimethalin, prosulfocarb and glyphosate should be prohibited.

Buying organic products: prevents agricultural poisons

When buying organic food products look for the green label „Agricultural poisons? No thanks!“

Together against agricultural poisons:

With the purchase of products that are marked with the green label “Agricultural poisons? No thanks!“ you help to preserve 100% organic food products.

At the same time, you support research projects that are initiated by the “Agricultural Alliance for Our Grandchildren’s Future”.

Every time you purchase a 1 L bottle Rapunzel Olive Oil mild, virgin extra in the Rapunzel Online Shop, we donate 1.70 € to the campaign against agricultural poisons.

Participating retail partners also feature Rapunzel Olive Oil and other products. Look for the green logo and continue to invest in organic food products without pesticides!
