OXYGUARD® oils: your daily Omega fatty acid bonus

Carefully manufactured in the Rapunzel oil mill in the Allgäu

Rapunzel OXYGUARD®-Öle –Das tägliche Plus an Omega-Fettsäuren
The valuable Rapunzel OXYGUARD® oils supplement your diet with an abundance of essential fatty acids that is very rare to find and has an exceptionally high nutritional value for your organism. The extremely gentle, patented OXYGUARD® process was specially developed in 1997 and offers optimal protection for sensitive polyunsaturated fatty acids from light, oxygen and heat.

Omega-3 (alpha linolenic acid) and Omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid) are essential fatty acids. 'Essential' means that our body cannot metabolize these vital fatty acids and has to rely on the uptake of these fatty acids through the diet.
Rapunzel OXYGUARD®-process

In comparison with the isolated administration of concentrated, long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids as e.g. in fish oil capsules, we do not use any isolated substances for our oils but only carefully processed, natural substances. Fatty acids are therefore supplied within the original food matrix that contains many additional, health-promoting substances such as phytosterols, tocopherols, carotenes, polyphenols and many more.

Exterior influences such as light, oxygen and heat accelerate the deterioration of the extremely sensitive ingredients. The OXYGUARD® process is performed under exclusion of light and air. High temperatures and high pressure are also avoided. Thus, the oil seed ingredients are preserved as far as possible, from the opening of the seed pods, through the pressing process all the way to the filling and packaging processes. An opaque cardboard box protects the oil until opening.

Rapunzel has been using the OXYGUARD® process for more than 20 years in order to preserve the valuable oil seed ingredients as best as possible from the opening of the seed pods, through the oil pressing process all the way to the bottling and packaging processes.
The oil comes into contact with oxygen only when the bottle has been opened. Therefore, an opened bottle should always be reclosed and kept refrigerated in its cardboard box.

OXYGUARD® Linseed oil

our Omega-3 top runner

Linseed is one of the world's oldest cultivated plants. Already the Egyptians and the Sumerians grew linseed some 8,000 years ago.

A few years ago the delicate plant with the blue flowers was included in the medicinal plants "hall of fame" due to all the healthy active substances it contains. The golden yellow oil sports (nearly 51 percent) alpha-linolenic acid that can be metabolized in the body to the Omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both, EPA and DHA are very important for the body.

No other plant oil supplies more vital alpha-linolenic acid! Only 1-2 tablespoons of linseed oil cover the daily requirement of essential Omega-3 fatty acid.

Our consumption recommendation: enjoy the pure flavor of linseed oil
  • in orange / carrot juice: one tablespoon linseed oil stirred into the juice in the morning tastes delicious and supports the intake of carotenoids from the carrot juice.
  • in muesli, sweet or savory curd cheese and yoghurt.
  • as finish: use to refine different meals such as steamed vegetables or scrambled egg.
  • linseed oil is great with potatoes and herb curd - and particullarly delicious.

OXYGUARD® Hemp oil

unique combination of Omega-3 fatty acids, abundant phytosterols and vitamin E

The oil from the cannabis plant has no hallucinatory effects but is beneficial for your health: with a total of 79 percent of polyunsaturated fatty acids, it ranks among the most healthy vegetable oils.

Unusual is the fact that hemp oil contains both linoleic (Omega-6) and alpha linolenic acids (Omega-3) and thus has all essential fatty acids that our body needs - including rare gamma linolenic acid (GLA).

Hemp oil is also one of the few sources for stearidonic acid, a long-chain Omega-3 fatty acid that is an important intermediate product for the formation of EPA and DHA.

The abundant concentration of vitamin E helps to protect cells against oxidative stress. One tablespoon hemp oil contains approximately 1.1 g alpha-linolenic acid (Ω3), 3.8 g linoleic acid (Ω6) and 217 mg of gamma linolenic acid.

Our consumption recommendation
  • hemp oil gives savory bread spreads and dips a wonderfully nutty note.

OXYGUARD® Omega 3-6-9

All-round protection with linseed, hemp and pumpkin

The perfect trio for an "all-round carefree" oil: linseed, hemp and native pumpkin oil combined in a delicious mixture with complementary fatty acids: "3-6-9" is the formula for all-round protection!

Linseed oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (linolenic acid), hemp oil convinces with high concentrations of Omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid) and rare gamma linolenic acid and pumpkin oil provides the body with monounsaturated oleic acid - an Omega-9 fatty acid.

With respect to flavor, the three energizer oils harmonize perfectly: the nutty, rather tart note of linseed and hemp oil is pleasantly complemented by the particularly mild, virgin pumpkin kernel oil. We recommend a portion of 2 tablespoons.

Our consumption recommendation
  • great for different cottage cheese dishes

OXYGUARD® Linseed oil with Evening primrose oil

valuable medicinal plant oil with a high content of gamma linolenic acid

The bright yellow flowers of the evening primrose emit a scent that beguiles the senses.

The seeds of the medicinal plant that comes from Northern America are used for the production of a valuable oil that has an extremely high content of gamma linolenic acid (GLA). In addition, the plant also forms dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid which is important for the production of endogenous messenger substances with anti-inflammatory effects.

Evening primrose oil also features a very high concentration of antioxidative polyphenols that is higher than in most other vegetable oils. Abundant vitamin E helps to protect cells against oxidative stress.

Our consumption recommendation
  • drip one tablespoon on green leaf salad
  • use to prepare green smoothies
  • topically applied, evening primrose oil soothes and cares for dry skin

OXYGUARD® Chia Omega Power

a genuine gourmet oil

This composition made from virgin walnut, linseed oil and cold-pressed Chia oil is characterized by a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The mild walnut oil makes this mixture a true gourmet oil.

Next to valuable golden linseed oil, the oil mixture also contains Omega-3 rich Chia and walnut oil, making it a first-class supplier of alpha linolenic acid.

Chia oil is cold-pressed from Chia seeds (Salvia hispanica) and can be compared to linseed oil with respect to its fatty acid composition. However, Chia oil has a much milder flavor.

Our consumption recommendation
  • in smoothies or breakfast porridge

OXYGUARD® Pumpkin kernel oil

pithy, nutty aroma

The intense green, virgin pumpkin kernel oil has a pleasantly nutty taste and enjoys growing popularity. Other than is usual, the pumpkin seeds for this oil speciality are not roasted prior to pressing but are cold pressed. Therefore, the virgin pumpkin kernel oil has a milder taste than the roasted variety and the typical pithy and nutty aroma of the pumpkin seeds is more pronounced.

OXYGUARD® virgin Pumpkin kernel oil features a high content of essential, polyunsaturated fatty acids (50g/100g) and is rich in vitamin E with 19 mg per 100 g (corresponding to 158 percent of the reference quantity).

We recommend a portion of 1-2 tablespoons. One tablespoon of pumpkin kernel oil à 7 g contains 3.5 g polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Our consumption recommendation
  • for dressing and dips
  • use to refine green smoothies, salads, soups
  • for desserts

OXYGUARD® Camelina oil

mild and savory aroma

Gold of pleasure (Camelina sativa L.), a very old crop plant originating from Europe, belongs to the family of the cruciferous plants (Brassicacea) like canola, mustard or different cabbage varieties. The oil that is made from the small seeds has a delicate, pea-like flavor that ressembles the taste of fresh vegetables.

Rapunzel OXYGUARD® Camelina oil virgin consists of 53 percent polyunsaturated fatty acids and with its 32 g alpha linolenic acid, it is particularly rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Alpha linolenic acid helps to maintain a normal cholesterol level in the blood.

The positive effects can already be observed with a daily uptake of 2 g alpha linolenic acid. One tablespoon Camelina oil à 7 g contains about 2.3 g alpha linolenic acid (Ω3).

Our consumption recommendation
  • for green smoothies
  • for salads and dips
  • for vegetable dishes
  • for bread spreads

OXYGUARD® Walnut oil

a fine, nutty delicacy

Walnut oil is a true delicacy with the typical nutty aroma of the walnut. The virgin oil has a significant milder taste than the roasted variety.

The abundance of valuable ingredients gets preserved by the gentle OXYGUARD® process. This fine walnut oil features a high content of Omega-3 fatty acids (alpha linolenic acid 10.9 g in 100 g) and supplies 12 mg vitamin E per 100 g oil (100 percent of the reference quantity).

The high concentration of vitamin E helps to protects cells against oxidative stress. One tablespoon walnut oil à 7 g contains 5 g polyunsaturated fatty acids including approx. 0.8 g alpha linolenic acid (Ω3) and about 4 g linoleic acid (Ω6).

Our consumption recommendation
  • for salads and vegetable dishes
  • for sweet desserts
  • in smoothies

Interesting facts about OXYGUARD® oils

What's so special about OXYGUARD®?

Rapunzel OXYGUARD® oils are characterized by a special fatty acid spectrum because these oils are produced with the specific, patented OXYGUARD® process that protects sensitive, polyunsaturated fatty acids against light, oxygen and heat.

Carefully selected, small amounts of seeds are pressed in special oil presses without any input of heat. The used oil presses have only a small loading capacity and the press stroke is very short. This allows to perform the pressing at low pressure and enables us to keep the temperature below 40°C. The freshly pressed oil is filtered only through the separated press cake and gets immediately bottled. A dark glass bottle and an opaque cardboard box protect the oil during transport and storage and guarantee the preservation of its quality.

Optimal use & storage

Once the bottle has been opened, the OXYGUARD® oils come into contact with air and light that were excluded during the production and the storage of the oil. In order to preserve the quality as best as possible until the oil is used up we recommend the following storage tips:

  • Protect against heat!
add the valuable oils only after cooking or use them for cold dishes because heat destroys polyunsaturated fatty acids.
  • Reclose well!
  • the oil must be protected against air because oxygen harms the valuable unsaturated fatty acids.
  • Store in the dark!
light is one of the greatest enemies of valuable oil as it accelerates the reactions between fatty acids and oxygen by the factor of 1,000.
  • Store cold!
all the processes that cause the deterioration of important oil ingredients can be significantly slowed down in well-cooled oil.
Protect OXYGUARD® oils against heat, always reclose the bottles and store them well refrigerated in their cardboard boxes!

Background knowledge on Omega fatty acids

The health benefits of Omega fatty acids

Regardles if Omega-3, -5, -6 or -9 – all Omega fatty acids have numerous beneficial effects in the body and are vitally important for our health. Among these fatty acids are even two polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential and that must be taken up with the diet: alpha linolenic acid (Omega-3) and linoleic acid (Omega-6).

These two fatty acids are metabolized in the body to longer-chain and even higher polyunsaturated fatty acids with the help of special enzyme complexes. Alpha linolenic acid is metabolized to stearidonic acid that is transformed further to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Highly polyunsaturated, long-chain fatty acids can be found in many important tissue types such as the nerve or the brain tissue. In addition, Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids that were metabolized through enzyme complex act also as substrates for special, endogenous tissue hormones (prostaglandins, prostacyclines, leukotrienes, thromboxanes), the so-called "eicosanoids" that are substantially involved in the control of important metabolic functions.

More than pure energy sources for metabolism

Fatty acids that are taken up with the diet are involved in the construction of cell membranes. The fatty acids are located in a boundary layer between cell interior and exterior and are very important for the quality of the cell membrane, for stimulus conduction and the functional properties of the cell membrane. This effect is especially important for tissue types with high cell division rates such as skin, red blood cells and immune cells.

High-quality, virgin vegetable oils not only provide essential fatty acids but also special, secondary plant phytochemicals, the so-called phytosterols. Phytosterols are mainly found in oily plant components that are further enriched in the oil through a gentle pressing process. Currently, some 44 phytosterols from 7 different plant families are known; all these compounds have very specific effects on the metabolism. Phytosterols from pumpkin seeds, for example, have positive effect on the prostate gland. Furthermore, it is well established that phytosterols prohibit the uptake of cholesterol from the intestine and support its excretion via bile.

Oils also act as carriers for important fat-soluble viatmins

Oils are also carriers of important fat-souluble vitamins, in a unique, natural combination with all so-called vitamers of vitamin E.

There are different forms of vitamin E that are subdivided in alpha-, beta- and delta-tocopherol and that make up natural vitamin E together with the tocotrienols. This natural vitamin E combination, carotenes and other antioxidative components of the oil (e.g. polyphenols in evening primrose oil) support endogenous mechanisms against free radicals.

Many virgin oils also contain vitamin K that plays an important role in blood coagulation and the preservation of bone mass.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 - the right balance is important

Omega-3- (alpha linolenic acid) and Omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid) are essential - which means that our body cannot form these vital fatty acids and has to rely on their supply with the food. Today's diet consumes great amounts of linoleic acid due to our increased consumption of meat and dairy products. Currently, Germans consume about 7 times more Omega-6 fatty acids than Omega-3 fatty acids which results in health disadvantages.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids compete for the same enzyme complexes. This means, if big amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids are taken up - as is the case with Western eating habits - the body forms mainly gamma linolenic acid, dihomo-gamma linolenic acid as well as arachidonic acid. On the other hand, the formation of metabolites of Omega-3 fatty acids with positive health effects, such as stearidonic acid, EPA and DHA is reduced.
Important for a positive health effect is the correct ratio of the two fatty acids with respect to each other. The German Nutrition Association (www.dge.de) recommends a ratio of 5:1 - maximally five times the amount of Omega-6 fatty acids should be taken up compared to Omega-3 fatty acids.

Rapunzel OXYGUARD® vegetable oils have very high, naturally occurring concentrations of these fatty acids and are therefore perfect for ensuring a sufficient supply with linolenic acid.
Therefore, they are making an important contribution to achieve the needed balance: they are rich in Omega-3 and have an ideal ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids.
A regular consumption of our linseed oil (1 Tbs per day) or our hemp oil makes a valuable contribution to a healthy diet. Other excellent vegetable oils that supply Omega-3 fatty acids are camelina oil, pumpkin kernel oil or walnut oil. Other food products that have similarly beneficial effects are soy products, walnuts, spinach, algae or canola oil.
